Professional Staff Opportunities

  • The Ohio Recreational Sports Association is arguably the strongest state association within NIRSA. We are passionate people who are proud of our programs, services, facilities, and traditions. The ORSA Executive Committee feels we have an obligation to continue to provide our association's members with the very best leadership our state has to offer. We want to thank each individual for taking the time to stand for office and serve our great organization! More information about opportunities to serve will be in 2024.   • Three distinct roles comprise the professional portion of the Executive Committee: President Elect, President and Past President.

    • Association members vote on the President Elect position at the annual fall workshop.

    • At the conclusion of the annual workshop, the new executive committee assumes responsibility for the association

    • The professional Executive Committee members receive a travel stipend to attend NIRSA/ORSA related events. The travel stipend is determined on an annual basis by the Budget and Allocations Committee.

Ad Hoc and Standing Committees

    Ad-hoc committee applications will be accepted and confirmed prior to the state workshop each year. Check back for additional information in the fall leading up to the ORSA workshop.

  • PURPOSE:

    To honor and recognize, through the ORSA Honor Award and other means, current and former ORSA members for outstanding achievements and contributions in the profession.

    FUNCTION:

    • Identify and review criteria for which the award is presented and make recommendations for revision if necessary.

    • Solicit nomination materials from current members for the ORSA Honor Award. Award is presented every other year.

    • Review nomination materials, ensure eligibility and select award recipient. Provide name to President, Past President and President Elect.

    • Previous recipient presents to current recipient at the ORSA State Workshop.

    • Provide information to Marketing Committee for inclusion on ORSA website and newsletter.

    • Identify and recommend other awards/recognitions that can be presented to deserving ORSA members. Prepare recommendations for the President, Past President and President Elect to review and approve.

  • PURPOSE:

    To provide financial oversight of the Ohio Recreational Sports Association (ORSA) while establishing guiding principles that serve as a foundation from which both short and long-range financial planning occurs and annual budgets are developed and managed.

    FUNCTION:

    • Develop an annual operating budget that reflects ORSA's mission, vision, and key priorities.

    • Executive Committee members will serve in an Ex Officio capacity and will not have decision making responsibility for budget allocations on an annual basis.

    • Executive Committee members will assist in developing short and long-range financial goals along with funding strategies to achieve them.

    • Ensure compliance with budget timelines:

    • The ORSA budget will operate on a fiscal calendar (July 1-June 30)

    • The Vice President will distribute budget requests by October 15. All committee budget requests are due to the Vice President by December 15.

    • The Budget and Allocations Committee will review and prioritize allocations based on ORSA goals and objectives and develop the new fiscal year budget by January 15.

    • The Budget and Allocations Committee will present an operating budget by June 15 to the Executive Committee.

    • The Executive Committee will provide final approval to the budget by June 30.

    • Develop a contingency reserve fund of $14,000 in the event of unanticipated financial conditions that may occur in any given year.

    • Work with the ORSA Treasurer to confirm appropriate record keeping and ensure policies and procedures for financial transactions are documented and updated as necessary.

    • Monitor adherence to the budget by actively reviewing revenue and expenditures.

    • Provide historical data to ORSA Committees as needed.

    • Ensure approved financial policies and procedures are followed.

    • Ensure ORSA non-profit status is maintained.

    • Review, modify, or change the goals of the Committee as needed on an annual basis.

  • PURPOSE:

    To ensure high quality educational presentations and programs at all ORSA events including the State Workshop and the Summer Outreach.

    FUNCTION:

    • Identify and actively recruit potential presenters for all ORSA events.

    • Review presentation proposal submissions for all ORSA events

    • Collaborate with the ORSA Professional Development Committee on potential sessions and gaps in session topics.

    • Contact chosen presenters for all ORSA events.

    • Determine presentation schedule for all ORSA events

    • Develop, administer, and track presentation assessments and feedback for all ORSA events.

    • Coordinate presentation schedule and facility needs with the host site planning committee for all ORSA events.

    • Make recommendations for future educational events and programs.

    • Report on ORSA members that are presenting at regional and state conferences.

    HISTORY

    • This committee was formed in Fall 2019.

  • PURPOSE

    To assist in promoting and maintaining extramural activities among the ORSA membership.

    FUNCTION:

    • Develop opportunities for extramural activities in the state of Ohio.

    • Work with scholarship committee to develop scholarships for student participation in extramural activities.

    • Assist in publicizing events, send email announcements to membership, and provide information to the Secretary for inclusion in the ORSA newsletter.

  • PURPOSE:

    To coordinate all aspect of marketing for the ORSA organization, provide guidance and resources to members and institutions in regards to marketing ORSA and related events, and advance the ORSA brand locally, regionally and nationally.     FUNCTION:

    • Develop and maintain brand standards for the ORSA organization.

    • Regularly update and maintain the ORSA website.

    • Maintain regular activity on ORSA's social media channels to engage ORSA members and promote the ORSA brand.

    • Assist with marketing and promotions for ORSA and related events.

    • Take an active role is highlighting member and institution accomplishments and programs.

    • Assist other committees and organization as a whole with marketing, promotions, advertising, and outreach.

    • Utilize marketing tactics and platforms strategically, including but not limited to: print, web, email, social media and video.

  • PURPOSE:

    To assist in promoting and maintaining social relationships and networking opportunities among the ORSA membership through sponsored events and activities; and to coordinate all areas of ORSA membership including active recruitment and retention.

    FUNCTION:

    • Coordinate ORSA Social at the Annual NIRSA conference.

    • Assist the Host Committee with ORSA State Workshop and ORSA Summer Outreach social as needed.

    • Develop and distribute ORSA membership packets to all non-members within the state of Ohio including a welcome letter from the committee chair and president, school informational sheet, directory, membership information and workshop information.

    • Travel to non-ORSA member schools to meet them, introduce them to ORSA, and tour their facilities.

    • Review the membership and involvement trends of the ORSA and other related state organizations and report on a regular basis such findings to the President and Vice President.

    • Identify marketing efforts to recruit membership from Junior/Community Colleges, Correctional Institutions, and private Recreation Centers.

    • Keep statistical records of ORSA membership; provide information for ORSA newsletter.

    • Welcome all new institutional, professional, and student members to ORSA at the State Workshop and National Conference Business Meetings.

  • PURPOSE:

    To present nominees for elected professional offices (president, Vice President and Secretary) to the membership and conduct the election at the ORSA State Workshop during even years to present nominees for State Student Representative to the student membership and conduct the election at the ORSA State Workshop every year.

    FUNCTION:

    • Secure written permission from the nominee to place their name in nomination.

    • Present at least two nominees for each office at the State Workshop.

    • Be responsible for compiling picture and vitae sheet for each candidate and submit candidate summaries for the ORSA Newsletter which immediately precede the election.

    • Be responsible for informing all candidates for office that they will be asked to give a five minute presentation at the ORSA State Workshop.

    • Distribute, collect and count the ballots for the annual election.

    • Develop suggestions and recommendations regarding the processes that ORSA might use to encourage more members to seek leadership positions within ORSA. Develop guidelines that will continue to give consideration to the recruitment and development of women and minority candidates. Submit recommendations to the President annually.

  • PURPOSE:

    The ORSA Conference Host Committee was formed to give schools of all sizes the opportunity to host an ORSA State Workshop. Members of the Committee will be charged with:

    FUNCTION:

    • Recruiting vendors and sponsorship.

    • Conference Registration (on-site and online)

    • All marketing including designing the logo, slogan, booklet and apparel

    • Recruiting, scheduling and organizing presentations

    • Collaborating with the ORSA Treasurer on all conference financial matters.

  • PURPOSE:

    To aid undergraduate and graduate students in personal and professional development by creating opportunities to learn and grow from other students in the state of Ohio. Students will gain knowledge of what it takes to build a holistic recreational program, and learn the importance of early association involvement. Students will have opportunities to work closely with members of the ORSA Executive Board, network with other students and professionals, create mentorships, attend workshops, share knowledge with their fellow student employees, and brainstorm ways to enhance the program at their home institution.

    ELIGIBILITY:

    Must be an undergraduate or graduate student working for a campus recreation department in the state of Ohio. No prior ORSA, Region III or NIRSA involvement is required. Any age or year in school is welcome to apply. Sport and recreation-majors are not required – students from all backgrounds of knowledge and interests are encouraged!

    DUTIES:

    • Create a mission statement, along with goals for the committee to accomplish

    • Work closely with the ORSA State Student Representative, and occasionally with the ORSA Exec Team

    • Attend monthly personal and professional development workshops (through a live-stream)

    • Identify ways to better serve the student population in the state of Ohio

    • Create relationships with students and professional staff at their home institution, as well as others

    • Attend workshops and information sessions at conferences like Student Lead-On, ORSA, and NIRSA

    • Brainstorm presentation ideas and submit proposals with fellow committee members for future conferences

    • Make suggestions to their home institution on ways to improve staff training, morale, incentives, and professional development

    • Assist in the creation of a mentorship program

    • Develop recruitment strategies and social media ideas for prospective committee members

    • Work with fellow members to brainstorm other committee responsibilities or opportunities for next year’s committee

  • PURPOSE

    The ORSA Professional Development (PD) Committee is committed to providing resources, opportunities, and support to all ORSA members to help advance their personal and professional growth. The primary function of the committee is oversight of the ORSA scholarship process.

    FUNCTION

    • Oversee scholarship applications for various ORSA and NIRSA opportunities

    • Review resumes and cover letters as requested

    • Offer presentations at conferences and workshops

    • Plan and implement preconference workshops

    • Provide additional funding for professional growth

    HISTORY

    The ORSA scholarship program was originated in 1997 with the implementation of the Will M. Holsberry Student Scholarship. Since 1997 the ORSA scholarship program has expanded to provide students and professionals with the opportunity to attend the NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation Annual Conference and Expo, the NIRSA School of Collegiate Recreation, Region III Student Lead-On, and the ORSA State Workshop
